Equipment Selection

The first thing you need to do is decide what kind of still you want. That question brings up another: What kind of spirit do you want to make? Bourbon? Rum? Corn whiskey? These require a simple pot still.

Vodka? You’re going to need a reflux still for that. If you know for a fact you’ll only be making whiskeys, then just worry about a pot still. Most of us won’t be satisfied with that though. If you’re like me and like to experiment, you’ll want it all — which brings us to the reflux still. Most designs can run as a pot still for making whiskeys and rums, referred to here as Flavor Positive Spirits (FPS).
